
Approximately 158 species of bird have been observed making their home in Suncheon Bay
These include 15 species of Hooded Crane that has been declared a natural treasure of Korea. Six endangered species, 13 protected species, 12 species listed in the Red Data Book of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), 15 species listed in the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) Annex, and, finally, 15 species listed in the RAMSAR Convention.
Suncheon Bay provides habitat for more than 1% of the world's Grus Monacha (Hooded Crane) and Larus Saundersi (Saunders Gull), 18% of Tadoma Tadoma (Shelduck), and 7% of Calidris Alpina (Dunlin). These are all internationally protected species.
Dominant species of the region are: Anas Acuta Acuta (Common Pintail), Tadoma Tadoma (Shelduck), and Anas Platyrhynchos (Mallard).
Other species that regularly visit the area are: Grus Vipio (White-Nape Crane); Plataleo Minor (Spoonbill); Ciconia Boyciana (Common Stork); Falco Tinnunculus Interstinctus (Kestrel); Microsarcops Cinereus (Gray-Headed Lapwing); and Haematopus Ostralegus Osculans (Eurasian Oystercatcher).
