Phragmites Communis is the reason why Suncheon Bay can maintain its clean ecological system.
The roots of these reeds accelerate the growth of certain bacteria that acts as filters and absorbents of mud-solids.
The stems and leaves obstruct the growth of seaweed and slows down wind speed on the surface of the water. The plants further transmit certain gasses into both the atmosphere and water to assist in the transmission of oxygen to the underwater sections of surrounding plants.
The reeds also increase the levels of dissolved oxygen necessary for the breakdown of organic matter, which in turn assists in enhancing water quality. Oxygen freed by the roots of the reeds oxidizes soil into a resolving state, promoting the activation of micro-organisms that assist in the dissolution of pollution particles.
The wide spread of the reed beds provides an environment for a large variety of micro-organisms that assists in the general disseverment and conversion of various types of air, soil and water pollutants.
