A Living BeachThe Beach: A bridge from land
		  to sea.

Beach, a neutral zone connecting land and sea

The beach is an area of nature that connects the land with the sea. This area provides a habitat and breeding ground for numerous species of shellfish as well as fish. More than 60% of all fish caught are spawned within the beach region, and about one third of endangered species currently inhabit the beach areas of Suncheon Bay.

A huge variety of species lives in and around the beach area. These number around 230 species of fish, 193 species of crab, 74 species of shrimp and about 58 species of shellfish.

These species choose to make the beach their home because of it¡¯s nutritionally-rich salt. According to ¡°NATURE¡±, one of England¡¯s leading science magazines, the ecological value of a beach can be determined at around US$ 9 990 per 1 kilometer

This reflects a higher value than that for farmland, which is calculated to be around US$ 92.00. The Korean Ministry of Environmental Protection has evaluated the ecological value of Korean beaches to be around US$ 24 315.00. This rating is higher than those of foreign countries because of the high value of production placed on the beach habitats.

The beach of Suncheon Bay¡¯s annual production, when converted into economic value, becomes about 24.5 square kilometer
